MMI Presents First Masonry Award

New Ideas In Masonry Building Aired
Speakers at a recent Masonry Institute of Michigan technical meeting for contributors were Gerry Kincade (third from left) of Owens-Corning Fiberglas and George Ivany (fourth from left) of George R. Ivany & Associates, Cleveland. Kincade described his company's new product, BlocBond, which permits the construction of block walls without mortar; after the block are dry stacked above the first course, BlocBond is troweled on both sides. Ivany discussed his own invention, Ivany Block, a specially designed unit that facilitates the placement of both horizontal and vertical rods in reinforced construction applications. Bricklaying Trade Draws Another Woman
The current bid by women to become bricklayers continues to escalate. The lady latest in the news is a 5-foot 2-inch former school teacher from Dallas, Mrs. Alana Steele. She says she took up bricklaying simply because it pays more than teaching.
The 23-year-old brunette, whose husband is a law student, has a degree in education and taught for awhile. "But frankly," she told an Associated Press reporter, "it doesn't pay enough money."
She is now serving out a three-year apprenticeship with the bricklayers' union Local No. 5 and attends night classes. "The men at the union were great," she beamed. "They never once made fun of me."
Although the men she works with didn't expect her to last, they have totally accepted her in their ranks, according to Mrs. Steele.
Anthony Cappolo, foreman on the job, admits he also had misgivings at first, but now is taking her presence in stride. "I was a school teacher myself back in New York," he recalled. "I got out for the same reason-no money."
