ABOUT OUR COVER

Kent Elementary School in the historic Charlestown section of Boston represents one of the most unique and sculpturally exciting masonry designs in North America. Architects Earl R. Flansburgh & Associates Inc. of Cambridge (Mass.) utilized a symmetry of design reminiscent of the pueblos of early New Mexico but as modern as tomorrow.

Situated on 2.7 acres of steeply sloping site, the building is stepped down in two directions. The main street facade echoes the three-story flavor in both height and width of the neighboring row houses. By stepping the school down the steep slope, Architect Flansburgh was able to reserve half of the site for play areas.

A total of 459,290 face brick, 631 still units and 3,700 coping units of masonry went into the 93,350-square-foot project. The building and mason contractor was E. C. Blanchard Co., Inc. of Lynn (Mass.).

Want more from your association? Here's the way to obtain it!

"When many say of governmental affairs, What does it matter?, the future may be shaky." So said Benjamin Franklin. His advice to his countrymen in the 18th century is equally true today. It is not confined to government: associations often have the same problem-too many "satisfied" members who are content to let the other fellow do the work and call the tune.

Indifference and apathy undermine effectiveness no matter where their blight appears. Glossed over by complacency, like dry rot under an attractive veneer, they eat their way into the organization structure. So it weakens gradually, with hardly anyone aware. But the signs can be detected by those in a position to read them.

Appointing officers can get their clue when lining up talent for committees. Chairmen are alerted by attendance and participation at meetings. Staff has an index in the ratio of returns to announcements, letters and bulletins. But members have the best diagnosing equipment of all ability to analyze their own reactions and attitudes to the groups they belong to. For example, how many times have you said to yourself, "I'm too busy. Let someone else do it?"

Unfortunately, not everything can be delegated. No matter how many willing assistants you have. there is always a residue labeled "Do It Yourself." It is on this crucial element that so-called "working" members find opportunities for growth and service.

What all this amounts to, in essence, is getting more out of your association by:
* Using its services to best advantage.
* Participating in various programs and projects and keeping informed about them.
* Promptly reading association reports and publications.
* Answering letters, questionnaires and requests for information.
