A search effort is being considered which would be part of noise-abatement plans of association member and non-member companies choosing to sign the agreement. According to Lenchuk, the companies would not be subject to citations for violation of workplace noise standards while an agreement is in force. However, they would commit themselves to installation of controls recommended as a result of the research effort if the controls are determined feasible and applicable to individual plant operations. It should also be noted that all signing companies would be required to maintain protection programs during the length of the research. The agreement must be approved by the affected unions prior to becoming final.




OSHA Citations. A Westwood (N.J.) company is contesting two serious citations with $850 fines each for perimeter protection violations under section 1926.450 (A) (9). The firm is also contesting non-serious citations amounting to $1,175 in penalties for six items including standard railing violations, housekeeping violations and wall opening violations.




A Philadelphia construction firm recently was tagged with a citation and a $16,000 proposed penalty for violation of section 1926.500 covering standard railings and toe boards. This citation is the firm's second for a similar violation in a short span of time. The company was also cited for lack of a steel stair railings and several fire extinguisher violations.




In Richards City, Tenn., a concrete construction firm has been cited and a proposed penalty of $500 issued for violation of clean working atmosphere for employees. The citation read in part that the absence of a suitable and effective dust collection system exposed employees to serious health hazards.

An East Boston (Mass.) construction company was recently cited and fined $170 for violation of section 1926.100 -failure to provide adequate head protection. Two other citations alleged the firm failed to provide a safe means of access to scaffolds and failed to install guard rails and toe boards on elevated scaffolds.
