Open airiness permeates the entire attractive design of Eisenhower Elementary School, with masonry featured throughout the interiors and exteriors of the five-building complex.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School
Vancouver, Washington
Architect: Donald H. Lindgren
Structural Engineer: Donald R. Kramer & Associates
General Contractor: Larry Pratka
Mason Contractor: Thad Freese

The open concept building designed for this elementary school was developed to give more flexibility to the child's educational program and to break down the grade level barriers as presently known. As the school program progresses, there will be an easing together of age brackets in groups of students who can function together at approximate maturity levels.

With openness in mind, architect Donald H. Lindgren of Vancouver designed this school with 8 thru-the-wall units of drypress manufactured in 4" x 16" face dimension. The school consists of three 10-sided building complexes plus a gymnasium, or multi-purpose room, and cafeteria.

All exterior walls are of reinforced brick masonry grouted at columns to support the glu-laminated beams and roof decking. Exposed interior masonry walls are proving very popular with the Vancouver School Board, architect Lindgren indicated, making this the fourth all-masonry-constructed school in the past five years in Vancouver.

Two major brick plants manufacturing drypress face brick presently serve the Northwest. The brick carry the general product description of "jumbo units" and are being used in many types of projects at a substantial savings to the client. Architects are particularly recommending this type of unit for partitions and corridors.

A cost summary of Eisenhower Elementary School shows a contract cost of $889,184 or $21.19 per square foot. Costs are exclusive of land, landscaping, furnishings and fees.

Drawing shows the various elements comprising the three 10-sided buildings and the two adjacent structures, all for student use at Eisenhower Elementary School.
