Jos. L. Muscarelle Center
Fairleigh Dickinson University
Teaneck, N.J.
A landmark structure both in function and appearance, the Jos. L. Muscarelle Center for Building Construction Studies, Teaneck, New Jersey, was designed specifically to house Fairleigh Dickinson University's prototype four-year program in Engineering Technology Construction Option.
Dedication of the structure marks fulfillment of a dream for its donor, Jos. L. Muscarelle, Sr., and the solution to a problem that has plagued the construction industry and educators for many years: how to obtain and train management personnel with the right balance of academic knowledge, construction know-how and business acumen.
Mr. Muscarelle himself best summed up the philosophy behind the program and the structure which houses it: "Traditionally in the construction industry, architects have seen trained to design buildings, engineers to support them both structurally and mechanically and landscape and interior design specialists to adorn them, but we've never attempted to teach anyone how to put all these diverse elements together soundly, in a good workman-like manner, economically and within a reasonable time frame into what we call a 'building.'"
To assure that the best creative thought available would go into designing the structure for the new program, fulfilling this goal of training professionals who can efficiently combine all these diverse elements, an AIA approved design competition was held. Allen E. Roberts, AIA was the professional adviser for the design competition.
