Masonry Does It Again! This Time In 14 Days

Constructed with concrete masonry at a cost lower than that of a metal building, this maintenance garage for the Marysville, Michigan, School District was completed in 14 days. Standing in front of the building, from left, are Bob Watson, superintendent of buildings for the school district: Ronald Wiltsie, superintendent of the Marysville Public Schools: Tony Galan of Burde & Galan Contractors, Inc., of Port Huron, the mason contractor; Pat Malane, business representative of Bricklayers Local #10, Port Huron: Horace Boddy, president of Beddy Construction, Marysville, the general contractor; and Gerry Burde of Burde & Galan.

A small project completed recently in the Marysville School District, located in the thumb area of Michigan-northeast of Detroit, demonstrates once again the competitive advantages of masonry over metal buildings.

The project, a one-story, 3,000 square-foot maintenance garage, was designed by Valentine-Thomas Associates, Inc., of Port Huron, Michigan, so that it could be bid either concrete masonry or as a pre-engineered metal building.

Low bidder on the masonry alternate was Boddy Construction of Marysville at $31,900. Bids on the metal building alternate ranged from $35.200 to $38,500.

Boddy was awarded the contract. Masonry had won the battle of initial cost. But that was only part of the story.

From the time Boddy started on the job, with Burde & Galan Contractors, Inc., of Port Huron, doing the masonry, until the keys were turned over to the school district, only 14 days elapsed! It was constructed with standard 8" concrete masonry units by bricklayers from Local #10, Port Huron.

"With a metal building, it would have taken at least 60 days to get the materials, plus erection time," said Horace Boddy, president of Boddy Construction. "The school district was so pleased with the results that we received a complete check for the work in 19 days. There was no retention."

Ronald Wiltsie, superintendent of the Marysville Public Schools, said that "our initial assumption that a metal building would be less expensive proved not to be the case. We wanted to get in the building as quickly as possible, so we were delighted with the speed of construction achieved with masonry."

This small project, combined with similar case studies from around the country, shows that masonry has managed to overcome the two strongest selling points of metal buildings: initial cost and speed of construction.
