Honors Masonry Designs
Two winners were selected in the second annual Honor Awards Program for Excellence in Masonry sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Northwestern Ohio in cooperation with the Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The winners were:
Rooney, Musser & Associates, Inc., Findlay, Ohio, cited for its design of the Ohio Farmers. Inc. office building. Fostoria, Ohio.
Samborn. Steketee, Otis & Evans, Inc., Toledo, cited for the design of its own corporate headquarters in downtown. Toledo.
In addition to the architects, Honor Awards also were presented to the Ohio Farmers Grain Corp.. owner of the Fostoria project. and to S. A. Storer & Sons (MCAA), Toledo, mason contractor on both of the winning buildings.

The 1977 winners, as selected by an independent jury of architects from the Pittsburgh area, were announced on November 8 at a Masonry Day banquet at the Brandywine Country Club in Maumee. The winners received handsome bronze plaques cast in the shape of the state of Ohio.
The Ohio Farmers building. completed in July, 1977, was given a masonry sculptured form to contrast with the grain cooperative's adjacent concrete elevator silos. Rising one-and-a-half stories and accented by an atrium skylight. the building provides 12,000 square feet of space on the main level.
The jury said it was "impressed with the particular elegance of this well-ordered building seen against the huge. simple backdrop of the grain elevators." The brick selected for the exterior is an earth-tone modular unit which also was used in planters at the entrance of the building. Scored concrete masonry units were used for some of the basement walls. and quarry tile in the lobby and atrium.
Masonry Selected for Restoration Work
The new headquarters of Samborn, Steketee. Otis & Evans in Toledo is an outstanding example of a growing national trend toward restoration of existing buildings with masonry. In this case, two adjoining steel-frame structures built in the 1920's were recycled into a two-story office complex with the addition of a curved plaza facade in brick and through complete refacing of the existing exterior, also in brick.
