5th Annual Golden Trowel Awards Presented in Salt Lake City

Six buildings, five of which are pictured here, have been honored as "Outstanding New Masonry Structures In Utah" in the fifth annual Golden Trowel Awards program sponsored by Utah Masonry Research & Promotion.

A panel of architects gave the highest award, the Masonry Award of Excellence, to the Leach Racquetball Club in Provo for its "simple form, excellent relationship to site, and good transition from the exterior to the interior."

Merit Awards were presented to the Williams Research Center, Ogden, and the new Provo Firestation in Provo. Jury Recognition Awards were given to the Little America Hotel, Salt Lake City (for craftsmanship and fine detailing), and the Elko (Nev.) Civic Center (for innovative use of masonry).

The restored Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City received a Special Recognition Award for "retention and enhancement of the character of the building through the faithfulness of the restoration."

Mason contractor: Billie Adams & Sons. Jury comments: "Simple form, well related to site. Nice translation of design from the exterior to the interior. Dynamic interior space."




Little America Hotel, Salt Lake City, Utah. Architect: Martin Stern, AIA, Architects. Structural engineer: John A. Martin & Associates. General contractor: Okland Construction Co., Inc. Mason contractor: Andre Gramme Masonry. Jury comments: "Recognition by the architectural jury to the mason contractor for his craftsmanship in working with the design of the architect and engineer. Fine detailing with brick."




Williams Research Corporation, Ogden, Utah. Architect: Case, Lowe & Hart Architects Engineers. Structural engineer: Adamson Engineering. General contractor: Interwest Construction. Mason contractor: Travis Masonry. Jury comments: "Simple, strong form with dynamic entry."




Provo Firestation, Provo, Utah. Architect: Joe Ashworth & Associates. Structural engineer: E. W. Allen & Associates. General contractor: Dixon, Inc. Mason contractor: Glen W. Close. Jury comments: "Pleasant forms detailed in brick. Consistent use of brick around building with brick pavers and retaining walls."
