Loadbearing Masonry Being Studied for Egyptian Housing
Loadbearing masonry construction will be a prominent feature of a new cooperative research venture between Lehigh University and the Egyptian government to build low-cost housing in Egypt.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, the program is directed by Dr. Lambert Tall, Lehigh professor of civil engineering. His co-director is Dr. Mostafa El-Hifnawi, recently appointed Minister for Housing in Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's Cabinet.
The joint effort calls for technology transfer from the U.S. to Egypt as well as in the opposite direction.
Lehigh University's Dr. Lambert Tall (left) and Dr. Mostafa El-Hifnawi of Egypt discuss cooperative program utilizing load-bearing masonry construction for low-cost housing in Egypt.
"This project gives the U.S. construction industry a rare opportunity to build complete houses in Egypt and test them thoroughly, which is not economically feasible to do today in the U.S.," according to Dr. Tall.
"We are working together on technical problems, and we are making recommendations for construction practice which can be used in the U.S. and elsewhere. This is surely a major improvement over the old method of providing foreign aid with cash handouts."
Dealing essentially with masonry housing, the cooperative study has already pinpointed the need in Egypt for loadbearing construction together with improved construction practices. As a result, new building brick have been developed from desert shale to substitute for the brick once made from Nile River silt, which is no longer available now that the Aswan Dam controls the annual flooding of the river.
