Arkansas MCA Awards $5,800 in Scholarships to U. of Arkansas School of Architecture

Scholarships totaling $5,800 have been awarded to students in the School of Architecture, University of Arkansas, by the Arkansas Chapter of MCAA and the Arkansas Masonry Development Trust.

The grants were presented recently to five students by Ted H. Brewer, executive director of the Chapter. The largest grant, for $3,000 and from the Masonry Trust, went to David W. McKee of Bentonville. Scholarships of $700 each were given to Keith R. Franklin, Hattiesville: Gary W. Clements, Austin: Tom L. Kemp, Pine Bluff: and Walter E. Stephens, Little Rock.

"The purpose of the scholarships, in addition to helping the students," Brewer said, "is to give them an opportunity to become better acquainted with masonry materials and products as they become involved in construction, whether in the rehabilitation and preservation of buildings or the creation of the most contemporary new structures."

The scholarship recipients are chosen on the basis of need, academic interest and ability, and interest and involvement in the construction process, according to C. M. Smart, dean of the School of Architecture.

Recipients of $700 scholarships from the Arkansas Chapter of MCAA are these four students in the University of Arkansas School of Architecture (from left): Keith Franklin, Gary W. Clements, Walter Stephens and Tom L. Kemp. Recipient of the $3,000 grant was David W. McKee (not pictured). Standing behind (from left) are Ted H.
