MAJESTIC CIRCULATOR

circulator through vents near the floor. As the air is warmed through contact with the back and sidewalls of the firebox, it rises and is forced by fans back into the room through vents placed a few feet above the intake vents. Inside the Majestic Circulator, special blades are added to increase the heat transfer area and to help direct the flow of air. Such blades increase the total heat output of the fireplace form.
The interest in fireplaces as heat sources has skyrocketed in the last five years, according to Cox. This interest has led The Majestic Company to increase its research, development and extensive product testing. (Majestic Circulators now carry a 25-year warranty based on tests and research.)
Majestic called upon an independent test laboratory, Gas & Mechanical Laboratories, to test its most recent Circulator model MC series for ICBO approval. Describing the test, Cox recalls, "They (G&ML) built a fire that was so hot and so fast it was like proof-testing a blast furnace.
They 'over-fired,' about three times a normal fire, with kiln-dried Douglas fir for about 8 hours. Then they created a flash fire by increasing the fuel supply rate by 8 times. There were flames shooting 15 feet out the top of the chimney. It was spectacular," says Cox.
The ICBO listing program accepts Underwriters Laboratories standards and guidelines for fireplace safety. Among elements tested are electrical requirements for fans, standards for placement of hot air exit grilles, hearth extension and mantel locations, and suitable metal materials and gauges.
Performance, according to Cox, is what Majestic is selling these days in the fireplace market. "It used to be that everybody wanted to sit in front of a glowing fire with his faithful dog at his side. Now people want performance. Mason contractors can take advantage of these trends by becoming energy marketers," Cox believes. "Fireplaces cannot be sold in the future if they are an energy liability. They will have to be proven contributors of heat to the home."
