Police "Sting" Suspect in Heavy
Equipment Theft Operation

In an undercover operation reminiscent of the hit movie, "The Sting," Chicago suburban police were successful recently in breaking up a major heavy equipment theft ring. Their month-long investigation resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old man and the recovery of a late model Caterpillar bulldozer valued at $90,000.

The police pulled off the scam by setting up a dummy excavating firm as well as a phony $40,000 bank account with the cooperation of a local bank. They then selected a site where excavation work was under way and agreed to take delivery of the bulldozer there at an agreed-upon price of $30,000. After the equipment was delivered the police added more realism by test-driving the machine around the site before identifying themselves as law enforcement officers.

According to the police, the suspect, who operates a towing company southwest of Chicago, took great pains to investigate the undercover detectives but came up with nothing.

"He had checked our men out," the police chief was quoted as saying in a newspaper account of the "sting" operation. "He had contacted a major rental equipment company, which worked with us and put receipts in their files that showed (our dummy firm) had rented equipment from them in the past. (The suspect) also contacted a local bank, which worked with us by setting up the phony $40,000 bank account." The undercover detectives also had obtained convincing but phony identification as part of the scheme.

According to the police, other heavy equipment found at the suspect's towing firm also may have been stolen. A double back-hoe there, valued at $100,000, had its serial numbers removed. The operation is believed to be linked with equipment thefts in several other states, the police said.

(A major article on construction equipment theft, The Heavyweight Thieves, appeared in the September, 1979 issue of Masonry.)

Bonsal Office Project Moves Ahead

Summer, 1981, is the target date for opening of W. R. Bonsal Co.'s new corporate headquarters and research laboratory in Charlotte, N.C. Structural and exterior work by Myers & Chapman are nearly completed on the innovative building, which makes use of solar energy and a new system of exterior insulation or building "envelope." Putting the insulation on the outside is made possible by the use of a Bonsal product, Surface Bonding Cement, which protects the exterior insulation while providing an attractive surface finish to the walls. The 19,500-square-foot building, designed by Odell Associates, is in the Arrowood Southern Executive Park, near 1-77 on Charlotte's South Side.
