AIA Bestows Honorary Membership on Heslip

John A. Heslip, executive director of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, has been elected to honorary membership in the Detroit Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

As the chapter's 1980 honoree, Heslip joins a select group of 22 individuals who have been so recognized since 1958. In making the presentation, Kenneth Neumann, FAIA, selection committee chairman, commended Heslip for establishing the Masonry Institute as a "credible, impartial source of information and counsel to the architectural profession."

Patrick R. Massardy, president of JCB Inc., Baltimore, Md., U.S. Subsidiary of the British construction equipment manufacturer, L. C. Bamford Excavators Ltd., has been named to the parent company's board of directors headquartered in Rochester, England. Richard T. Lindgren has been appointed a group vice president of Dominion Bridge Co. Ltd., Montreal, Que., and of its U.S. subsidiary, AMCA International Corp. Lindgren has been chairman and president of Koehring Co., which was recently acquired by AMCA, and will continue in that capacity at Koehring's headquarters in Brookfield, Wis. NCMA Passive Solar Seminar Draws Big Audience

The largest attendance ever for an NCMA national marketing seminar-some 220 representatives from concrete block companies throughout the United States-converged on Chicago October 13-16 for one and a half days of intensive discussion of "The Great New Market for Block-Solar Architecture." Intended to set the stage for NCMA's 1981 program on solar architecture, which will be the major thrust of the association's efforts, the seminar covered a wide range of information that block producers will need in order to cash in on the huge potential market that awaits them in the decade ahead. The 11 speakers who addressed the seminar were from the research, engineering and architectural professions.


Perlite Institute Sets Meeting for Ireland

The Perlite Institute announced it will hold its 32nd annual meeting in Killarney, Ireland, May 25-30, at the Europe Hotel. Membership in the Institute is comprised of perlite producers, processors and applicators in 22 countries.


IMI '81 Media Plan

The International Masonry Institute's 1981 national advertising program will utilize a total of 12 magazines two of them Canadian for a total of 60 full-page insertions.

Audiences covered by the magazines include architects, engineers, building owners, and contractors and craftsmen in the masonry industry.

The magazines on the schedule are: AIA Journal, Architectural Record, Builder, Building Design & Construction, Consulting Engineer, ENR, Buildings, Canadian Architect, Canadian Building, Professional Builder, Journal (BAC), and Masonry (MCAA).


Ground Broken for New Solar Energy Center

The architecture faculty and students at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., with the assistance of Indiana architects, broke ground recently for a new $7.7 million addition to the school's College of Architecture and Planning. The project is targeted for completion in September, 1982 and will incorporate an innovative solar energy education center.

"The new center will enable Ball State and the state of Indiana to assume a leadership role in educating students and the general public in energy use and conservation as well as environmental design," said Charles M. Sappenfield, dean of the College of Architecture. The solar education center is believed to be a first for an architecture college in the United States, according to Sappenfield.


Patent Scaffolding at New Dallas Location

Patent Scaffolding Co.'s Dallas branch office has moved into new, larger facilities at 2449 Manana Dr., after 35 years at its former location on Singleton Blvd. The five-acre site includes offices, warehousing, storage yard and maintenance facilities.
