"Energy Conservation in Buildings: An Economics Guidebook for Investment Decisions" by Dr. Harold Marshall and Rosalie Ruegg. 149 pp.: $5.00: Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington. D.C. 20402. Order by S.D. Stock No. 003-003-02192-0.
This comprehensive guide to basic economic concepts and tools for making decisions about energy conservation and solar energy investments in buildings has been prepared by economists in the Center for Building Technology at the National Bureau of Standards. It is the "parent" guide from which the popularized Simplified Energy Design Economics (SP 544) was extracted.
The larger handbook gives special attention to solar energy investments and includes extensive problem sets. It is designed to assist architects, engineers, building contractors and others solve fairly sophisticated design problems.
Five tools of economic analysis are explained: life-cycle costs, net benefits, savings-to-investment ratio, internal rate of return, and discounted payback. Detailed case illustrations for solar heating and window design (not included in the simplified edition) are also described.
1980 Edition of "Manual of Concrete Practice." The complete five-part set available at $115.00 ($85.00 to ACI members); individual parts available at $29.95 each ($21.95 to ACI members); add $5.00 to each order for shipping and handling. American Concrete Institute, P.O. Box 19150, Detroit, MI 48219.
This new edition of ACI's Manual of Concrete Practice has been expanded to five volumes. The five parts can be ordered as a set or purchased separately.
Part I covers materials and general properties of concrete. Part 2 covers construction practices, inspection, and pavements. Part 3 includes standards and reports on the use of concrete in buildings-design, specifications and related topics.
Part 4 includes material on bridges substructures, sanitary and other special structures as well as structural properties in general. Part 5 covers masonry, precast concrete and special processes.
