Passive Solar, Energy Efficiency Featured in Detroit High School
Passive solar design and energy conservation measures highlight the architectural features inherent in the recently completed three-unit building program at Northwestern High School in Detroit, Mich.
Designed by the architectural firm of Louis G. Redstone Associates, Inc., Livonia, Mich., the newest 185,000 sq. ft. addition accommodates 1,720 students and interconnects the two earlier units. The finalized complex is being hailed as "one of the finest educational facilities and complete academic programs in the country."
The new addition boasts such features as a planetarium and a mass communications center complete with studio, sound booths, and radio broadcast and TV control rooms. The two earlier buildings house industrial arts, food preparation and dining areas, performing arts and physical education facilities. Unique features include a natatorium with two swimming pools, gymnasiums, performing arts theater with an elevator orchestra pit, and auxiliary theaters.
The exterior finish of the newly completed section is brick and metal trim selected to match the two existing buildings. The structure consists
