Writer Square: A People Place
Writer Square is destined to be a popular people place for the general public as well as the people who live and work there.
"My personal goal in the design was to create architecture for people and not for architects," said Ronald E. Rinker, the partner in charge of the architectural design.
And columnist Max Price of the Denver Post wrote about the project: "In my view, Writer Square is one of the better things to have happened to downtown Denver in recent years. The design is indeed eclectic, drawing as it does from various elements of its surroundings. But the architects have done so with admirable taste and sensitivity. Hopefully, Writer Square will set a trend for other residential/retail/office developments including mixed-income projects in the downtown area."
All of the masonry was performed by Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Greeley, Colo., under the direction of masonry superintendent Harold McAuliffe and supervised by masonry foreman Dean Prieskorn. Nicholas A. Jovene Jr. was the project manager and Fritz Rohn the superintendent.
The project utilized more than 500,000 specially selected brick manufactured by Robinson Brick Co. of Denver. Colored mortar to match the brick was supplied by Rio Grande Co., also of Denver.

Movie on Watertight Wall Research
"The Effect of Mortar on Wall Leakage" is the title of a new 16mm movie covering the lime industry's research involving the ASTM E-514 test.
The 14-minute sound film describes the watertight wall research sponsored by three companies in 1978-Rockwell Lime, U.S. Gypsum, and Western Lime & Cement-which was the subject of National Lime Association Mortar Tech Note No. 5.
The movie footage of the wall construction was taken by the U.S. Gypsum research laboratory under the direction of Byron Powell, while the actual walls under test were shot by Kenneth A. Gutschick, vice president & technical director of the National Lime Association.
Copies of the film are available in both 16mm or Super 8mm. For more information, contact; Kenneth A. Gutschick, National Lime Association, 5010 Wisconsin Ave., Washington, DC 20016, (202) 966-3418.
