Masonry Institute of Michigan Presents "M Awards"

Buildings in Petoskey, Lansing, Kentwood, Monroe and Troy were the winners of 1980 "M Awards" for excellence in masonry design in the sixth annual honor awards program sponsored recently by the Masonry Institute of Michigan in cooperation with the Michigan Society of Architects.

The honored projects range in size from a $25 million medical complex to a $220,000 fire station. Three of the five were designed in brick, two in concrete masonry.

The awards, all of equal value, went to:

Additions to Burns Clinic Medical Center and Northern Michigan Hospitals, Petoskey, given a unified design in brick by architects Graheck, Bell, Kline & Brown.

Brick was chosen as the primary exterior material "since it blends with the neighboring structures and serves to retain the residential character of the surrounding area," according to Gino Rosetti, FAIA, president of the architectural firm that designed the project. A standard-size iron-spot brick was used, with Indiana limestone trim. Paving brick were used in the outdoor plaza and lobby areas, and glass block to admit natural light into the office areas.

This $25 million project consists of additions to two existing buildings in a hospital/medical complex that overlooks Little Traverse Boy in Petoskey. The buildings are of a unified design in brick masonry. Features of both structures include continuous windows with sloping brick sills at spandrel sections, and curved brick columns and stair towers.
