Troy Fire Station, Troy, Mich.

Architect: Straub. Van Dine Associates/Architects, Troy. Structural engineer: Lefkofsky. Bobish & Associates, Inc., Southfield, Mich. Mason contractor: Hillyer Construction Corp., Birmingham, Mich. The building is of loadbearing masonry design and provides 5,100 sq. ft. of space. The exterior walls are 8-in. split-rib concrete masonry units with loose-fill insulation in the cores. "Masonry was selected for its economy, permanence, easy maintenance and adaptability to both interior and exterior situations," said Frank Straub, AIA, president of the architectural firm.

Foster Building, Lansing, Mich.

Architect: Mayotte, D'Haene & Associates, Inc., East Lansing. Structural engineer: Leonhardt, Kreps. Ten Eyck & Associates. Toledo. es. Toledo, Ohio. Mason contructor: Schiffer Mason Contracting. Holt, Mich. This renovation project in downtown Lansing saw two 50-year-old adjacent structures converted into a single office building. A new facing of exterior brick served to unify the structure and provide a solid appearance. For the building's new stairway and elevator shaft, loadbearing masonry walls were installed tight to the steel-frame structure, and existing floors were cut out. The brick theme was carried into the foyer and atrium areas.

Kentwood City Center, Kentwood, Mich.

Architect: Robert Lee Wold & Associates, Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich. Structural engineer: William Paxton & Associates, Inc., Detroit. Mich. The different functions of the new city hall, police department and district court of this Grand Rapids suburb are expressed as different building masses grouped around a two-story skylighted lobby. "The use of split-rib concrete block was an important design decision because it is an economical material which has texture, visual interest and human scale, and because the use of it on the interior as well as the exterior provide a unified expression for the building," said Robert Lee Wold. AIA, the architect. The split-rib block are 4-in. units and are backed by standard 8-in. concrete block with loose-fill insulation in the cores.
