Central Pennsylvania Design Awards

The Masonry Contractors Association of Central Pennsylvania held its Architects' Reception and Excellence in Masonry Design program recently at the Sheraton Harrisburg West, New Cumberland, Pa.

Scholl. Sowers & Associates, Inc. of Carlisle received awards for its design work in the commercial/industrial category on the Apple-a-Day Health Center, Mechanicsburg. The masonry contractor for the job was Caretti, Inc. of Camp Hill.

Inter-State Tile & Mantel Co., Inc. of Harrisburg was cited for its unique masonry work in the innovative design category on the Dauphin County Human Services Building in Harrisburg. John M. Kostecky. Jr. & Associates, Inc., Lemoyne, was the architect on the project.

John E. Keener, Inc., Mechanicsburg, was honored in the institutional category for its masonry work on the Advanced Technology & Health Science Center at Williamsport Area Community College. The firm of Hayes, Large, Suckling, Fruth & Wedge was the job's architect.

The Kostecky group performed the award-winning design in the residential category on One West Penn elderly housing in Carlisle. John B. Minnich & Son, Inc. was the masonry contractor.

Cited for their work in the renovation/restoration design category was Spillman Farmer Associates for First Presbyterian Church renovations in Carlisle. Caretti, Inc. performed the masonry work.

The Kostecky group also received the award in the landscape category for its design work on the entry court to Cumberland County Courthouse. Caretti was the masonry contractor.

A special judges' award was given to Althouse, Martin & Associates, Inc., Lancaster, for its architectural design on the Meridian Bank Control Center in Lancaster.

A panel of judges comprised completely of design professionals and industry leaders was established for the awards program. Those individuals included Arthur K. Anderson, Jr., Department of Architecture Head at Penn State University; Donald J. Woodland, professional engineer for the Brick Institute of America; and Michael Aquiline, 3rd vice president, Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen International Union.
