Mixers-A Matter of Choice
The idea that all mixers are just designed to mix leaves a lot of productivity and profit lying on the table. Value and return on investment now supersede price.
An important weapon in the Amason contractor's arsenal of tools is the mixer. The mixer's function is to provide consistent quality mortar (or other mediums) with speed and efficiency. Ease of operation, easy cleaning and simplicity of maintenance add to the mason's productivity and profit line (of no small importance in today's economy). A wide variety of mixers which will meet the demands of the mason contractor are available. New technologies have begun to emerge which may further enhance the mixer's ability to satisfy these needs.
The size of the contractor's operation, geographic location, and area of specialty or lack of specialty have influenced choice of the proper mixer. The demands of a world class economy are also beginning to reintroduce the concepts of quality and durability into today's market. Increasing demands of environmental responsibility add support to these concepts. Value is beginning to dominate price in the decisions of contractors today.
The small mason contractor or general contractor with small mason jobs, often finds that a concrete or drum style mixer handles their jobs very well. This type of mixer, though generally not as fast in mixing as paddle type mixers, will perform satisfactorily for small or occasional use when equipped with an aggressive mixing action. This style mixer is available in sizes ranging from 1½ cubic feet to 9 cubic feet.
Drum style mixers are commonly available with gasoline or electric power. Diesel powered units are available from some manufacturers in larger sizes. Belt drive or chain drives are available, with the direct chain drive generally regarded as requiring less maintenance.
The ability to use the mixer to pour concrete footings and pads adds to its productivity. This makes the drum style mixer the logical choice for the small contractor.
