STRESS IN PERSPECTIVE
Continued from Page 19

how to evolve a more flexible lifestyle and discover how to become more happy, relaxed and effective human beings.

That's why it's necessary to maintain balance not only in your business day but at home too. It's a necessity to achieve balance through a personal strategy that daily takes into account your intellectual, physical, family, social and spiritual, as well as business and financial goals and activities.

Planning our leisure hours may seem to epitomize an even more "up-tight", regimented approach to life. And yet, such an approach only reflects the obvious. If it's true that we are working more hours and have less time for leisure activities, then we must treasure time very carefully.

If we do not plan, for example, to spend a weekend with the family at the seashore it may very well not happen. And if it does not happen on a regular basis, we may well lose touch with our family and face the possibility of troubled children and/or marital breakdown-the very worst kind of stress-some time in the future. The constructive use of leisure time is not just a way to reduce stress. It also enriches our lives. It gives us a sense of perspective about who we are and what we are doing with ourselves. It helps us to see things from many different points of view. Apart from the obvious enrichment of our own lives, these insights can help in our professional lives as well.

If we are able to listen attentively to our children with patience and love, we are likely to listen more effectively to our co-workers and employees.

JOE KAMINSKI, president of Business Resource Group, is the exclusive marketer or the Priority Management Program. His company helps people get better organized, manage priorities, communicate effectively and plan for the future. He's located at 1311 Butterfield Road, Downers Grove, II. 60515.

Homebuilding
Recession Is Over

ACCORDING to Kenneth R. Harney in a November 1992 Washington Post article, single family housing has been on the upswing for a year.

Harney says that in some areas new construction starts are up by sixty percent or more, compared with last year. In many large metropolitan areas, permits or starts are up by twenty-five to thirty percent.

"The homebuilding recession, in other words," said Harney. "is over in most of the country. Gloom and doom were the right words for 1990-91, but they're simply inaccurate now."

SEISMIC CODE PROVISIONS

requirements for reinforcement in Category C also applies to these categories.

Conclusion
The new seismic design provisions being published by the model codes regulating most of the construction east of the Rockies will have an effect on the way new masonry buildings are built and will also affect the renovation of existing masonry buildings. It is important for mason contractors to be aware of these new requirements and to find ways to comply with them economically. As with any new development, there is sure to be additional change and refinement and as a result it is equally important to masons to keep a "weather eye" out for these changes.
