# Brick Room Creates Unique Atmosphere

DON FRANCOM, A MASTER MASON from Sandy, Utah, not only wanted to make a statement in brick, but he also wanted to create a room in his home that would show off his creative talents and bricklaying skills.
After considerable planning and consultation with a local structural engineer (taking into account seismic requirements), an entire section of his basement was developed into a unique "brick room."
Here bricks were incorporated into a fireplace, bar and dumbwaiter, walls, and even an arched ceiling.
For the ceiling, over 5,000 modular bricks were laid onto a supporting wooden template and reinforced from above with concrete and steel. Styrofoam strips were placed in the joints and later removed. Tuckpointing then provided the finishing touch in creating uniform rodded joints.
From simple brick and stone fireplace surrounds, to rooms built entirely of brick, masonry has the flexibility to create innovative designs.
