Jim Sage New Fastest Trowel
Jim Sage of Rob Guth Construction, Corona, California, wins national Fastest Trowel on the Block finals at Masonry Expo in San Diego.
JIM SAGE of Rob Guth Construction Company, Corona, California, recently hustled his way to victory in the nationwide finals of the "Fastest Trowel on the Block" competition. Guth was awarded not only the title, but a 1993 Ford pickup truck. The March 2 contest was scheduled to coincide with the annual Masonry Expo in San Diego.
Cheered on by their sponsors and an audience of several hundred Expo attendees, Sage and competitors from four U.S. regions rallied for the national title at this annual contest which is sponsored by the National Concrete Masonry Association.
Competition was fierce and formidable as Sage tested his skills against a dignified field of adversaries, including two-time defending champion Jeff Voss of Alta Loma, California. Knowing that quality workmanship was the key to victory, Sage aimed to place only as many block as he knew he could set perfectly in the allotted time.
At all levels of competition, from the qualifying rounds to the national finals, masons compete in a twenty-minute timed trial during which they must build a wall twenty-four feet in length and as high as possible. Although the goal is to build a wall as high as possible, only one-third of the points are judged by the quantity of block laid, while two-thirds are based on craftsmanship.
Sponsor of Sage's trip to the contest finals was Orco Block Company, headquartered in Stanton, California.
