Talk to reporters-"No comment" is not an option; these days, silence implies guilt. Return reporters' phone calls and grant their requests for interviews, but retain control over what you say.

Before you go in, know what the three or four points you want to make (your talking points) and prepare answers to likely questions. Keep in mind the audience for which the reporter works. Feel free to tape the interview. Some other things to remember when talking to reporters:

* Don't lie or mislead
* Short answers are better than long answers
* Speak in headlines: tell the conclusion first, then the information to back it up
* Don't speculate or answer hypothetical questions
* Speak clearly and keep your cool
* If you don't know the answer, say so. Tell the reporter you'll get the information later, and then do it
* Don't repeat a reporter's negative statements or accusations; in your answer
* Look at the interviewer, not the camera

Expected aftershocks Plan to be contacted by reporters after the initial crisis has died down. Lawsuits, government investigations, the first anniversary of the accident and similar accidents in the future will all likely generate additional coverage of your crisis.

A wise investment-Crisis planning may seem like a colossal task, and developing the initial plan IS time consuming. But investing the time now will give you more time when you need it most: to deal with a crisis. If the project is still too intimidating or if you don't have the time, consider using a public relations firm to create your plan.

If you follow the general guidelines outlined prepare a plan, educate your employees and say only what you know you can minimize the damage that rumors and false allegations can cause.
