JOB SAFETY
Promote Safe
On-the-Job Driving

MOTOR VEHICLE accidents are the number one cause of on-the-job fatalities in the U.S. Vehicle accidents bring economic loss as well as emotional distress for both the victim's family and employer. The company loses the expertise of the employee and may have to pay increased premiums for health, liability and worker's compensation insurance.

The Network Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) recently conducted studies to promote highway safety programs and documented tremendous savings that can result from reducing on-the-job traffic crashes. Seat belts have proven to be one of the best safety devices invented but to be effective they must be worn.

According to NETS:
* Every 50 cents invested in a company safety belt program produces a $100 savings in insurance costs and lost work time.
* Nationally, each 10 percent increase in seat belt use results in 1,700 fewer fatalities, 25,000 fewer injuries. and a savings of approximately $900 million in direct costs to society.

Many companies have saved both lives and dollars by implementing voluntary on-the-job seat belt usage policies or comprehensive auto safety policies. Statistics show that once a worker begins to buckle up, it becomes a habit both on and off the job.

Here are some startling facts that you should consider if you don't wear your seat belt:
* In a 30 mph collision with a stationary object, an un-belted occupant of a vehicle will be thrown into the windshield at a force 100 times the force of gravity-or the same as a fall from a three-story building.
* You're 25 times more likely to be fatally injured if you're thrown out of the vehicle.
* Eighty percent of serious injuries occur at less than 40 mph.
* The odds are one out of three that a safe driver will have a serious accident in their lifetime.
* A fatal accident occurs every 10 minutes in the United States.

The facts are clear but often ignored. An estimated 50 percent of drivers and passengers do not buckle up.
