THE VARIETY of brick sizes available has always been an asset to designers and manufacturers trying to create a distinctive look. However, the regional differences in names of units of roughly the same size hasn't been beneficial. The proliferation of names can make specifying difficult and confusing for the designer, especially one who works on projects throughout the country.

To correct this problem, a select committee appointed by the BIA/ NABD liaison committee and chaired by Gary Davis of Endicott Brick, worked for two years to arrive at a consensus agreement on standard nomenclature for brick sizes. The brick listed in the accompanying table represent roughly ninety percent of all brick currently manufactured.

The nomenclature listed was developed by a consensus process and as such, represents a standard for the brick industry. The use of this standard nomenclature by designers in their specifications and by manufacturers in their product information and promotional literature is strongly recommended.

To promote this new standard nomenclature, the Brick Institute of America has announced that they will publish a revised Technical Notes 10B-Brick Sizes and Related Information, containing the new standard nomenclature.
