INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS
An overview of organizations serving the masonry industry.
Portland Cement Association
As the cement industry's trade association since 1916, the Portland Cement Association is dedicated to improving and extending the uses of portland cement. PCA is a voluntary organization of cement companies in the United States and Canada. At present, the association membership accounts for eighty-two percent of U.S. Cement production capacity and one-hundred percent of Canadian capacity.
The association does not make, distribute, or sell portland or masonry cement. Rather, from its Skokie, Illinois headquarters, PCA conducts market development, research, public affairs, and educational activities on behalf of its members through a network of divisions, subsidiaries, and allied groups.
The Market Development division, along with Research and Technical Services, forms the core of PCA's programs and activities. Organized around targeted cement markets, Market Development directs promotional efforts at specific construction segments, codes and standards activities, and support for member company and allied local promotion.
The engineered structures and codes department promotes high tech concrete structures, such as bridges and high-rise buildings, and codes and standards work driven by technical advances in design and construction. Code specialists in the field promote and protect concrete and masonry interests in each of the three regional building code organizations.
Other staff promotion specialists focus on the residential and low-rise
