Even the two sides that had no man-made obstacles still presented a challenge. Concerns about the surrounding soil stability required an 18 inch foundation for the scaffolding. In all, the scaffolding erection required many man hours, spanning 25 days.

With the scaffolding now in place, major construction will begin.

"The main intention of this job is to repair the masonry," Bucko said. "The upper 40 feet of the tower have sustained significant weather damage. And while we have the scaffolding in place, it was also decided that this would be a good time to remove the bells and get them tuned."

In anticipation of the removal of the bells, Bucko said that a crane has already removed a set of columns from the north side of the structure. The removal of the columns created an opening into the belfry, wide enough for the bells to pass through.

"When the removal process begins, the bells will be moved out of the belfry using a hoist and pulley system powered by a crane," Bucko explained. "With the largest bell having a diameter of 60 inches, it was imperative that we used a scaffold system

To aid in the removal of the bells, the scaffolding around the opening into the beltry will be disassembled and the masonry columns will be removed. that could be easily modified.

"When the bells come out, the system scaffolding will allow us to remove only the necessary sections, without having to tear down an entire side of the scaffolding."

Once the major construction begins, Bucko anticipated the job will take about 12 months.

The tower's renovation includes a complete masonry repointing job, from the steeple to the base. Because the tower narrows near the top, engineers decided to bring in a swing scaffold to perform the masonry work.

"The system scaffolding was designed to allow a three-foot gap between the building and the scaffolding," Petrolle said. "The structure is secured with 48 inch-long wall ties. A swing scaffold will be suspended from the tower, allowing the scaffold to be raised or lowered to the level that's being working on."

The ladder has also installed an enclosure system on the upper levels of the scaffolding, to shield workers from strong winds and rain.

"You'd be surprised how hard that wind blows off of Cayuga Lake when you are 135 feet above ground," Petrolle said.
