Historic Facades
HISTORIC BUILDING FACADEN
The Landmarks Conservancy has released the second edition of Historic Building Facades: The Manual for Maintenance and Rehabilitation, a practical manual for laypersons and professionals alike that addresses how to inspect, repair, and maintain building facades. It contains 12 chapters that cover: Inspection; Plan for Restoration: Stone Masonry: Brick Masonry: Terra Cotta Masonry: Cast Stone: Mortar, Concrete, Cast Iron Sheet Metal; Wood & Caulks and Sealants. Historian James Marston Fitch wrote the foreword while contributors included distinguished preservationist, academics and architects. An excellently organized manual that takes a thorough look at the myriad components that compose a facade, paying close attention to the less-obvious threats to a building's health, like the encroachment of destructive bacteria and algae. Other topics include the composition and proper application of sealants and how to properly clean masonry. Historic Building Facades: The Manual for Maintenance and Rehabilitation costs $29.95 and is available at the offices of the Landmarks Conservancy, or by sending a check for $36.00 to: Publications, New York Landmarks Conservancy, 141 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10010, and through John Wiley & Sons at (800) 225-5945.
