with Key Note Speaker Tom DeFrank where he amazed the audience with inside stories of the past 25 years covering the White House for the Daily News and Newsweek. "Given the circumstances surrounding the White House over the past year, Tom DeFrank was a timely addition to this years exposition," stated Mike Adelizzi, Executive Director for the MCAA. Mr. Adelizzi continues, "Even more entertaining, though, were his inside stories from covering the past 7 US Presidents. Especially his stories about President Ford and President Bush- that's when everyone was listening, and laughing, to every word."

Directly after Mr. DeFrank spoke, the exhibit floor opened with the same vigor the rest of the program shared. Immediately the exhibit floor was alive with demonstrations, new products and advanced technologies. This year the Mason Contractor Pavilion boasted a record breaking 28, 350 square feet of exhibits. In 1998 in Charlotte the previous record was held at 23,000 square feet! Included were 5 companies with technology so new the patents are still being finalized.

One exhibitor even closed his deal over a power breakfast with his clients. One attendee stated, "I like making my buying decisions in a cost-effective, informative atmosphere. Here I can have all my questions answered while I am creating a relationship with the source." Shopping competing products and making buying decisions is a growing trend for many of the attendees at the Show. To make decisions easier, many exhibitors offer special rebates and show specials that save contractors money.

After exhibit hours on Friday evening, a reception was held to announce the Annual Excellence in Masonry Award Winners. Fortythree projects from around the country were entered into the competition. Judging, a very difficult task considering the quality of the projects entered, was performed in mid-January by 4 astute architects from the Continued on next page
