As with the chemical cleaning, test areas must be done. In fact, on painted buildings, a test patch should be conducted on each elevation, because building fronts are generally painted more frequently. Once the paint has been removed, if it is a brick or stone building, it is then ready to be cleaned with a restoration cleaner for neutralization and dirt removal.

Finally, there are general misconceptions given by a few individuals who are in the "don't restore/clean camp." They suggest that these chemical cleaners may have unknown effects on masonry surfaces, stating that this process often creates an artificial simulation of what the clean masonry substrate is perceived to have looked like.

Another unproven myth is that chemicals can precipitate soluble and insoluble salts at various depths of the substrate, which can create unwanted and unsightly effects. These individuals must be thinking about muriatic acid or contractors" "moonshine mixes," or improper cleaning procedures (ie. no pre-wetting). This is a fallacy that hasn't been experienced in over 50 years of product use of either of the two U.S. leading manufacturers of these products.

The sentiments of consultant and lecturer, Martin Weaver of Restoration Canada from an Association for Preservation Technology Bulletin, and concurred by Professor Norman Weiss of the Restore Curriculum of Columbia University, is, "it is significant to say that there is no scientific evidence at present to show that long-term damage is being done to masonry by cleaning with chemically-based cleaners."
