ANNUAL MASONRY GUILD ANNOUNCES ARCHITECTURAL AWARD WINNERS

(PHOENIX, AZ)-The 10th Annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards program honored its award winning homes and commercial buildings during a special awards banquet held Friday, October 19, 2001, at the Scottsdale Conference Resort. The program honored 14 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with the use of brick, block or natural stone.

This year's Gold Trowel winner (the top honor) was Target Financial Services in Tempe. According to Annelle M. Darby, A.I.A., of Dekker/Perich/Sabatini in New Mexico and chairperson of the award program's panel of jurors, the project won because masonry was used in an inventive and skillful way.

"The jury was immediately impressed with the clean lines and the subtle colors of the ground face masonry on the building. We liked the banding design with the darker colors as a base and lighter color as the wall rises," remarked Darby. "The detailing of the building was also an important factor. The way the windows are inset only slightly to maintain the exterior plane of the walls. We admired the corner details and the mason's skill to execute that detail. The jury was also impressed with the introduction of the exterior materials in interior spaces. The lobby is an extension of the exterior with the masonry stratification, two-story high ceilings and natural lighting," concluded Darby.

The project architect was Rich Varda, A.I.A., of RSP Architect, Ltd, Phoenix. The structural engineer was Paulo Koehler Consulting Structural Engineers, Inc., Scottsdale. The general contractor was Ryan Companies US, Phoenix. The mason contractor was G&G Masonry, Phoenix and the supplier was Superlite Block, Phoenix.
