The Nebraska Masonry Institute announced two Annual Achievement Awards for the year 2001.

Tom Hansen of T. Hansen Construction in Papillion, Nebraska was honored as well as Lisa Lackovic of Watkins Concrete Block in Omaha, Nebraska. Both were recognized for their continued personal dedication to the development of interests on behalf of the masonry industry.

Hansen is a commercial mason contractor specializing in schools and office buildings. He is a Director of the Nebraska Masonry Institute and a founder of the Mason Contractors' Association of Eastern Nebraska. Tom has been a proponent of masonry training and encouraging young people to enter the industry. He is also one of the founders of the Mason Training Institute.

Lackovic is marketing director for Watkins and is past president of the Nebraska Concrete Masonry Association and the Construction Specifications Institute and serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the National Concrete Masonry Association. Her efforts locally have been with promoting masonry to architectural and engineering market.

Executive Director of NMI, Don Litter and President of NMI, Lou Riedmann, presented the awards at the NMI Annual Banquet in November.

INDUSTRY SUMMIT MEETING HELD DURING MASONRY SHOWCASE

Local association presidents and staff met during the Masonry Showcase in Phoenix to discuss issues facing the industry and how the industry can deal more effectively with those issues. Thirty-five association professionals debated how the national Mason Contractors Association of America and local industry associations could work more closely to deal with long term issues. Participants called for a more unified response to the problems facing the industry and pledged to begin working more cooperatively. Some of the solutions include sharing information on what each group is doing to market masonry, linking local web sites through the MCAA's national web site, and developing masonry details making it easier for architects and engineers to design masonry.

The Mason Contractors Association of America presented Ryan O'Brien, retiring Executive Director for the California Council of Mason Contractors Association, its C. DeWitt Brown Lead Man Award. The Award is presented each year to those individuals who exhibit a lifetime of dedication and leadership to the masonry industry. O'Brien began his career as a mason contractor and helped to form the CCMCA where he later served as its Executive Director since 1962.
