Community Storm Shelters
Bolivar will erect two community storm shelters designed to withstand severe weather and large enough to accommodate 170-210 people, city officials said this past week. "In view of what storms have done in Polk and Cedar counties in the past few weeks. I think (public shelters) are a good idea," city engineer Milton Dickensheet says. "What we are building here is a reinforced masonry with a concrete roof," says Dickensheet. FEMA Region VII Acting Deputy Regional Director Robert Bissell says, "Bolivar's plans for reducing the damage brought on by disaster show it is looking at all hazards the inclusion of tornado shelters in the construction of a sports complex is a good example of good mitigation planning"
Reported by the Kansas City Star, "FEMA campaigns for stronger homebuilding." May 15. 2003: The Federal Emergency Management Agency is using recent area tornadoes to urge homeowners to better protect themselves and their property from future twisters. FEMA and some design engineers said builders should go a step further than the codes, bracketing walls to foundations and roofs and reinforcing masonry walls. FEMA says the cost can be higher, depending on the size of the house, but that homebuilders would be wise to spend the money.
