North Carolina State University is presenting six civil engineering and construction seminars in October and November. Two of these seminars will be of particular interest to mason contractors.

On October 27th, "Bracing Masonry Walls during Construction," presented by Dr. David W. Johnston, P.E., and Edwin C. Weaver, P.E., will cover the effects and monitoring of wind speed and loads, hazard identification, the limited access zone, scaffolding requirements, and the responsibility for adequate wall and bracing system design and implementation. Seating is limited to 50 students.

On November 3d, "A Construction Professional's Guide to Contracting, Dispute Resolution and Depositions," presented by David W. Bailey, Esq., Ernest F. Mallard, P.E., and Edwin C. Weaver, P.E., will discuss the fundamentals of contracts and the dispute resolution techniques, Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR), and what to do as an expert or fact witness.

L. F. Jennings, Inc. won two awards for Quality Construction from Washington Metropolitan Associated Builders & Contractors, presented at the 22nd Annual Banquet in Tyson's Corner, Va., on September 10.

The first project is "Poplar Run" in the category Commercial Construction value $25 million. The second project is "Alban Retail Center and Pet Resort" in the category Retail Construction value $5 million and over.

Dear Editor:

Thanks for fitting the Axel Ohman obituary in the recent magazine [August 2003, pg. 45]! It will be noticed and certainly appreciated by the mason contractors in this area.

Also, the "It Makes A Village" cover was one of the best in a long while! The featured Village pieces in the article were amazing.
