Where cement is in short supply, the reasons are typically twofold: strong cement demand has materialized due largely to strong residential construction activity, and not enough ships are available to bring in imported cement.
PCA forecasts Portland cement consumption of 112 million tons this year, a 4.4% gain from last year. Gains of 2.9% and 2.1% are forecast for 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Portland Cement Association Elects Chairman
The Portland Cement Association (PCA) Board of Directors elected James (Jim) A. Repman as Chairman in early November during the association's board meeting in Boca Raton, Fla. Repman will serve a two-year term as PCA Chairman, succeeding Dan Harrington of Lehigh Cement Company.
Repman is the current President and CEO of California Portland Cement and assumes the Chairman's role with more than 23 years of experience in the construction materials industry. Additionally, he has chaired PCA's Education Foundation and serves on the Executive Committee.
Also, Charlie Sunderland of Ash Grove Cement was elected Vice Chairman. Sunderland currently chairs PCA's Public Works Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee.
Based in Skokie, Ill., the Portland Cement Association represents cement companies in the United States and Canada. It conducts market development, engineering, research, education and public affairs programs.

BAC Honors American College of Building Arts
The Brick Association of the Carolinas (BAC) in conjunction with McKellar & Associates, an architectural design firm located in Mount Pleasant, S.C., presented a $2,000 scholarship award to the American College of Building Arts on Nov. 16, 2004. The scholarship donation is part of the BAC's annual Design with Brick competition. McKellar & Associates received the 2004 President's Award for exceptional skill and creativity in designing with brick. As part of their award recognition, the BAC contributed a $1,000 scholarship to their architectural school of choice to promote the training of skilled crafts-
