Consistency is Key for Fire Prevention

Words: Patrick Cunningham

One fire could damage and destroy a workplace in minutes, potentially leading to devastating consequences for your business, employees, clients, and community. What actions do you regularly take to help keep your workplace flame-free?

Fire Prevention Safety Checklist
Consistent use of a fire prevention safety checklist can be an easy way to help reduce workplace hazards. Examples of what could be on a checklist can include:

  • Checking fire extinguishers to make sure they are regularly serviced
  • Ensuring that heat-producing pieces of equipment and appliances are properly used and maintained
  • Verifying that electrical plugs, power strips, switches, and cords meet standard operating codes and are in good condition
  • Maintaining essential fire safety equipment, including smoke detectors and sprinklers
  • Following general housekeeping practices to keep your workplace clear of clutter and debris
  • Participating in regular training and fire drills
  • Regularly reviewing emergency response plans with others on your team
Safe Lithium-Ion Battery Use
Lithium-ion batteries are efficient, but can pose serious fire risks if mishandled. To reduce these risks, consider:

  • Using lithium-ion batteries that are certified by reputable labs
  • Following manufacturer guidelines for charging, storage, and use
  • Inspecting batteries for damage and disposing compromised batteries safely
Regular Business Walkthroughs
Regular workplace walkthroughs help to ensure your business is operating safely, and makes it easier to catch potential risks. It also sets a great example for employees, reinforcing that fire prevention is a shared responsibility.
