Outreach Outlook: Building the Future of Masonry

Words: Conner Birdsong

As we step into October, one thing is clear: the future of our trade depends on the instructors who dedicate themselves to teaching the next generation. Across the country, masonry programs are in need of qualified teachers who can share not only technical skills but also the values of craftsmanship, perseverance, and pride in building. These instructors are the backbone of our workforce pipeline, shaping young talent into tomorrow’s skilled professionals. If we are to ensure a thriving future for our industry, recruiting and supporting masonry educators must remain a top priority.

Equally vital is the active participation of local mason contractors in their nearby programs. Contractor involvement brings real-world experience into the classroom, introduces students to career pathways, and creates the all-important bridge between training and employment. When contractors step up, through mentorship, program support, site visits, or hiring graduates, they strengthen not just their own companies, but the entire industry. Your engagement has a lasting impact on students, programs, and communities.

This spirit of connection was on full display at the recent MCAA Mid-Year Meeting on Mackinac Island, where contractors came together for fellowship, networking, and learning. Events like these remind us of the strength of our industry when we gather in one place, sharing best practices, forming new partnerships, and celebrating the progress we’ve made. The conversations and collaborations that happen at these gatherings fuel our momentum for the year ahead.

Finally, we’re excited to share that the MCAA is a finalist for the Truist Foundation Inspire Awards. This recognition highlights our innovative approach to addressing the critical shortage of CTE teachers through our ReCastED program, which helps reskill mid-to-late-career tradespeople into certified instructors. The Inspire Awards will be live streamed on November 12. More information on the live event and livestream registration can be found at this link: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/truist-foundation-announces-launch-of-livestream-registration-for-third-inspire-awards-302527609.html. We encourage you to join, support our solution, and vote for the finalist that inspires you most. Your participation not only uplifts our work but also demonstrates the collective strength and creativity of the masonry industry.

As always, thank you to the educators, contractors, and partners who make all of this possible. Together, we are not just building walls, we are building a workforce, a community, and a legacy.
