Present Architectural Awards
Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston
The architectural firm of Charles Tapley Associates, Inc. has received the 1982 Nicholas Clayton Award for Outstanding Design with Masonry for its work on St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. The award was presented recently at a dinner for Gulf Coast area architects and masonry industry representatives by the Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston.
The building utilizes brick and limestone to create an imposing structure with a disciplined plan. A masonry wall and separate bell tower are used to form a cloister-like sequence. Arches and curved walls complement the angular form.
A second award, for Excellence In Design with Masonry, was presented to Ambrose & McEnany, Architects, in association with James Stirling. Michael Wilford & Associates, for the School of Architecture addition at Rice University, Houston. The contemporary plan of the addition is placed

Here is another view of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Houston, Texas, winner of the 1982 Nicholas Clayton Award for Outstanding Design with Masonry presented by the Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston. The jury for the competition cited the design for its "visual strength and humility." Charles Tapley Associates, Inc. was the architect, with masonry by W.W. Bartlett, Inc. Bartlett was also recognized for its work on the School of Architecture addition at Rice University in Houston and won an award for Excellence In Masonry Craftsmanship for its work on both projects.
