Extensive Restoration Work Begins
On Sandstone Walls of White House

Most of the exterior sandstone walls of the White House are being extensively restored under a contract awarded to RAMCO Technologies, Inc. of Hartford, Conn., the National Park Service announced. The work began on April 1, 1984, and will include the removal of 28 coats of paint ranging in thickness from ¼ to % of an inch from the North Portico of the residence. Stone repair, repointing and applying a coating to the restored surface will follow the paint removal phase.

The Park Service administers the White House as a national monument and will supervise the project. RAMCO Technologies, Inc, a specialty cleaning and restoration firm, is comprised of a team of restoration experts who have worked on numerous other projects that include the U.S. Capitol, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the Connecticut State Capitol.

Another Hartford firm, Hydrochemical Techniques, Inc., manufacturer of HydroClean Restoration Cleaning Systems, is providing the products that will be used on the White House.

Records indicate the White House was first painted in 1798. In recent times, it has been painted about every four years with extensive touch-up in between. The latest restoration work, begun in 1980, followed a two-year study by the National Bureau of Standards.

The bureau, known for its expertise in chemistry, did extensive testing in the laboratory and on test surfaces at the White House and concluded there were too many layers of incompatible coatings of paint on the building. They recommended a complete removal of all paint down to the bare stone.
