A. C. Frommeyer, 1961 MCAA convention co-chairman, is putting in the hours to qualify for his pilot's license. Harold W. Peterson, MCAA immediate past-president, spent a few days in the hospital last month. A fire last month damaged the headquarters of the Adolph Koretz Co., prominent Chicago equipment supplier.
Mr. and Mrs. James Lonie, Dayton, attended the annual meeting of the Tennessee MCAA Chapters in Memphis, where Jim (MCAA vice president) was one of the featured speakers. Thomas B. Redmond, Jr., has been appointed to the newly created post of Autoclave Engineer for National Concrete Masonry Association. Redmond was formerly an engineer assistant to director of research, Newport News (Va.) Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., and has experience on design of heating, cooling and pressure systems. His office is located at NCMA headquarters in Washington, D. C.
Tallman Gravel & Sand Supply Ltd., has opened a new $250,000 plant at Winnipeg, Canada, to manufacture concrete block. The plant has a capacity of 990 units per hours under a fully automated operation, the first of its kind in Manitoba.
C. O. Henriksen and his family are in Florida where they now maintain their residence on Captiva Island off the west coast of the southern part of the state. In Florida also were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Larsen, Arlington Heights, III., who made Hollywood their headquarters. While there they were visited by Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kesman, Brookfield, III. Illinois MCAA Chapters Meet Jan. 27-28

Walder Named President Of Richmond Chapter
RICHMOND, VA. New officers of the Mason Contractors Association of Richmond, Inc., elected to serve for 1961 are: president W. M. Walder, Jr.; vice president Richard Coates; secretary-treasurer Arthur D. Thomas; and assistant secretary A. Harry Wagner.
Present plans of the Richmond group include boosting membership and peak attendance at the 11th annual MCAA convention-show, Feb. 19-22, Philadelphia.
Indiana Group Reviews Bid Depository Setup
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. Members of the bid depository committee here met recently in seminar sessions with George A. Miller, MCAA executive vice president, to review the depository.
Following the meeting. Herschel Hunt, MCAA Apprenticeship Committee chairman, huddled with local officials to review apprenticeship matters and plan for the apprentice conference to be held during MCAA's 11th annual convention show, Feb. 19-22 in Philadelphia.
Hunt is also vice chairman of the National Joint Bricklaying Apprenticeship Committee.
Distributors Map '61 Program
WASHINGTON, D. C. The executive board of the National Association of Distributors & Dealers of Structural Clay Products met Jan. 9-10 at NADD headquarters to map the association's activities through the year. Presiding was John H. Donohue III, St. Paul, Minn., president.
SKOKIE, ILL. More than 40 MCA members representing 10 chapters attended the meeting of the Illinois Chapters of the Mason Contractors Association of America, Jan. 27-28, at the Villa Moderne here.
During pre-business sessions on Jan. 27, representatives inspected new construction work at the O'Hare Air Field in north suburban Chicago and toured the new million-dollar research laboratory of the Portland Cement Association.
Business sessions got underway Saturday, Jan. 28, with a discussion of "Hold-Harmless Clause" appearing in contracts by Walter Derk of Fred S. James Co. During his talk, Derk discussed the Illinois Scaffolding Act and briefed MCA representatives on various phases of contracts.
Projects under testing and research by the Portland Cement Association at PCA's Skokie lab were reviewed by engineers at a pre-luncheon session following Mr. Derk's talk.
Afternoon sessions opened with a "Housing Review and Forecast" by Edmund Shanahan, assistant vice president of the savings division, Bell Savings & Loan Association, who was assisted in his illustrated presentation by Robert Schroeder, also of Bell.
Peer Pedersen, MCAA legal counsel, followed with a review and discussion of local chapter problems.
MCA members rounded out Saturday sessions with a discussion of the newly-adopted Reciprocal Welfare Agreement.
A late-afternoon cocktail party was hosted by members of the MCA of Lake County.
Presiding at the meeting was State Vice President Reno Fabbri, Lake County, III.
Cincinnati UMA Boost Masonry With Aggressive Advertising
CINNCINNATI, OHIO The Unit Masonry Association of Greater Cincinnati is continuing its program of masonry promotion through the medium of full page advertisements in the Cincinnati Constructor, local publication of the construction industry.
In three successive issues, the UMA reserved full-page advertisements extolling the virtues of masonry construction. One issue features NCMA's "Shadowal" combined with slump brick in an ad entitled "Imaginative masonry." Others show a striking pierced wall and school facade, entitled "Dramatic Masonry" and "Beautiful Masonry," respectively.
