and checking materials, keeping accurate time records, maintaining discipline on the job site and maintaining a good safety record for the firm.

The seminar also stressed the necessity to control quality of workmanship on the job, and the need to train workmen in quality standards as a responsibility of the supervisor.

The Profit Objective
The contractor, if he is to head a profit making firm, was told that he must have a profit planning and control program. This program, they went on to say, must begin with the establishment of a profit objective.

This program involves determining where the contractor 'wants to be', and what he expects his firm to accomplish over an extended period of time. The establishment of this program will govern his managerial efforts and serve as a guide by which he can chart his day by day accomplishments.

Instructors Evans and Emery stated that the most usable objective is stated in terms of a percentage return on the original investment, and in terms of a percentage return on sales. They indicated, however, that the same results can be arrived at by other means.

They told the Colorado contractors to relate their profit objective to organizational assets and facilities and to set sales targets for the year ahead, the next five years and the next decade. The difference between the profit objective, in terms of dollars, and the sales target, is the volume of permissable expenses the contractors were told.

The instructors, Lee Evans and Raymond Emery, have been conducting schools such as this for 11 years. They have held similar seminars on 68 occasions for home builders, plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractors and mason contractors throughout the U.S.

Cook & Pruitt, well known masonry contractors from Miami and Fr. Louderdale, Florida, have now opened offices in St. Petersburgh. Pictured here is Jack Cook, center, with other employees in front of the new West Coast Florido office.
