"Building Construction Handbook," Second Edition, is a single, comprehensive volume of valuable information for everyone concerned with any aspect of building design and construction.
In accordance with the many changes and expansions in building technology, sections have been revised, rewritten, or increased to reflect the current thinking in the field of building design and construction. New material is included on the critical-path method of scheduling; the treatment of thin shells and folded plates has been substantially expanded; the sections on Concrete Construction, Structural Steel Construction, and Lightweight Steel Construction are thoroughly revised to record with the new design specifications in these fields; material has been added on plank-and-beam framing, pole-type buildings, and trussed rafters; data has been added on glazing compounds, structural gaskets, and thermal and sound-reduction characteristics of glass in the section on Windows; and Section 11, Doors, contains new articles on public entrance doors and radiation shielding doors.
Each of the 29 sections of "Building Construction Handbook," Second Edition, is written for the nonspecialist in the field and emphasizes fundamentals and the practical approach. The book provides the answers to the why and how of design and construction and treats each topic as briefly as clarity permits.
Frederick S. Merritt, senior editor for buildings of Engineering News-Record from 1944-1965, has been active in consulting engineering. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the American Concrete Institute and the Building Research Institute. Merritt is the author of "Stresses in Framed Structures," a section of Urquhart's Civil Engineering Handbook, and author of Mathematics Manual (McGraw-Hill, 1962).

"Foundation Construction," a practical, highly illustrated survey of underground and underwater construction engineering, is written from the standpoint of the contractor. It encompasses the theoretical and the practical, the simple and the technical. The material is organized into double-page spreads, each subject covered by a single page of text and a facing full-page, specially prepared illustration.
It presents comprehensive coverage of foundation construction, as well as all the recent advances in allied fields, such as subsurface grouting, dredging operations, and work under compressed air.
