Architects Request
Cold Weather Guides
The International Masonry Industry All Weather Council has received more than 500 requests from architects, engineers, building owners, and others for the Council's two cold-weather guides as a result of a news item in PROGRESSIVE ARCHITECTURE. A recent announcement in PROFESSIONAL BUILDER has resulted in 271 requests to date, according to the Council, which is composed of Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union, Laborers' International Union of North America, Mason Contractors Association of America, National Concrete Masonry Association, Portland Cement Association, and Structural Clay Products Institue.
In cooperation with the Council, the International Masonry Institute plans extensive promotion this fall to encourage cold-weather construction. The need for it is evident, for the Secretaries of Labor and Commerce report that about half of the construction industry's unemployment is due to seasonal factors. The Commerce Department reports that the economy loses up to $10-billion when bad weather halts construction, ties up capital, increases overhead, and idles craftsmen.

NADD Report
By: Jeffrey L. Brock
Washington, D. C.-The NADD sponsored National AIA scholarship has been presented to Mr. Gordon Binder. Mr. Binder will enter the final year of a six-year Masters of Architecture program at the University of Michigan. Needless to say at a time when expenses and tuition costs are on the rise this program enables NADD to express its confidence in students of Architecture Nationally. Mr. Binder ranks high among the most outstanding students who have been enrolled in Architecture during the past twenty-five years at the University of Michigan. One of the many fine traits characterizing Mr. Binder is an exceptional capability to analyze complex problems and NADD feels he is thoroughly worthy of the Industry's confidence.
The attendance at this years NADD June Meetings was down from previous years but resulted in a highly successful Meeting.
Considerable thought was given to a new concept in brick selling-IN THE WALL COSTS. The Spaulding Brick Company, Inc. in Boston has produced a brochure endeavoring to bridge this cost of installation gap and work along the same lines is being conducted by other NADD members in their respective areas.
NADD's newest member Company, Champion Brick Corporation of New Berlin, Wisconsin received approval from the Board of Directors at the June Meeting and will officially be represented by Mr. William Vanderveer.
Mr. Elbert Bradshaw, President of Linaburry Brick & Block Co., Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana has announced the appointment of Warren Hoy as Manager of Marketing of Commercial Sales for Linaburry.
Mr. Hoy has been in the construction industry for many years and prior to this was associated with Crane Co. and was Assistant Sales Manager of Central Supply Co. He is also a Past Officer of Construction Specifications Institute and National Association of Power Engineers.
Another activity conducted by NADD's Detroit Chapter revolved around the National AIA Convention in the Motor City. The effort and work devoted by these members to guarantee a professional program resulted in just that. With the participation of the Mason Contractors a true industry effort was also achieved.
