Glen-Gery to Open Brick Design Center in N.Y.

Glen-Gery Corp., Reading, Pa., plans to open an international Brickwork Design Center in New York City later this year.

The proposed 4,000 sq. ft. center will contain a library of information on brick, displays of more than 350 types, sizes and colors of brick, and a staff of specialists in architectural design and structural engineering.

Creative and technical services of these professionals and use of the center's facilities at 211 E. 49th St. will be free of charge to architects, designers and builders.

Glen-Gery opened its first U.S. Brickwork Design Center in Baltimore in August, 1983. A Washington, D.C., Center and a Philadelphia Center are also slated for opening this fall.

The centers are patterned after those introduced in Britain by Ibstock Johnsen, Glen-Gery's parent firm. They offer seminars on such topics as constructing parapets and arches: preventing water penetration; brick sculptures; landscaping, and matching old brick for restoration projects.

MCAA Members Enjoy a Day at the Track

MCAA was officially recognized at Arlington Park Race Track on June 8 by having the fifth race named in its honor. The occasion was part of the social activities during MCAA's Summer Executive Board Meeting at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. III., June 7-10. After the race, MCAA officers posed for a photo with winning jockey Stanley Spencer. (From left) Bob Hatch, treasurer; Jerry Dufour, vice president; Spencer, W. C. Dentinger, Jr., president, and Dee Brown, secretary. The winning horse, Perfect Affair, was pulling away at the wire.

In the Bill Dentinger Thoroughbred Handicapping Tournament held June 8, the winner of the competition was Ruth Leonard of St. Ann. Mo. Runners-up included Mary Dufour, Germantown, Wis.; Paul Hoggatt, Houston, Texas: Don Leonard, St. Ann; Jerry Williams, Carol Stream. III.; Bob Harrison, Arlington Heights, III.; Marlene Grant. St. Louis, and David Johnson, Villa Park. III.

Anna Toth, a guest of the Don Johnsons, made only two bets, but they were aggressive! She made a $20 Daily Double bet on 3-1. 8-1 won. She made a $16 Perfecta bet on 1-7. 7-1 won! She was close to knocking everyone's socks off, as either bet winning would have paid big.

Sincere thanks to Bill Dentinger, racing judge: Don Johnson, racing consultant, and Dick Wanta, racing statistician, who coordinated the activities for a smooth afternoon of enjoyment. Additional thanks to Paul Schroeder and members and their wives of the Mason Contractor Associations of DuPage County and Greater Chicago for their help in making MCAA's Day at the Track at Arlington Park a huge success.
