'84 MCAA Industry Tour Visits Belgium, Paris
With groups departing from Atlanta, New York and Chicago, the '85 MCAA Industry Tour got underway on Saturday, October 14th. Assembling in Brussels, the group spent three days touring various historic sites and visiting construction projects.
The group then boarded a motor-coach and headed for Paris, with stops at Waterloo and Reims. At Reims, a thorough inspection of its historic cathedral was made, with special emphasis on the restoration efforts.
In Paris, the group visited Versailles, the Louvre, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. The highlight of the entire tour was the visit on Friday to the Research Laboratories of the Building Industry at St. Remy. After being welcomed by Mm. Jean Bruchausen, president de L'Union Nationale de la Maconnerie, and Pierre Lagier, delegate general de L'Union Nationale de la Maconnerie, the group was given a comprehensive tour of the laboratories.
Lunch was served in the facility's dining room, and a lively discussion on contracting in the United States and France ensued. Both sides agreed to improve communications between their respective organizations and to study an exchange program of key personnel.
So that French construction techniques could be observed, a inspection tour of Pont Mirabeau, a condominium project, was conducted. After this two-hour visit of various sections of the huge job site, the group recessed and regrouped later for refreshments and more exchange of information.
NLRB Again Awards
Scaffolding to
Laborers
On October 22, 1984, NLRB chairman Donald Dotson and members Robert Hunter and Patricia Diaz Dennis, in an intricate series of cases, found that the work of erecting and dismantling pipe scaffolding for the installation of masonry work shall be the work of the Laborers.
This case involved Laborers Local 223, Laborers' International Union of North America; Boston District Council of Carpenters affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America, and Local Unions 33 and 218; and Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts, Inc., Blount Brothers Corp., Volpe Construction Co., Inc., G. J. Luchetti, Inc., and Anastasi Brothers Corp.
The disputes stemmed from work at the Lafayette Place project in Boston and the Malden Hospital site in Malden, Mass.
See elsewhere in this issue for the complete NLRB decision.
