Assuring the Quality of Masonry Mortar
by John Melander

Providing quality goods and services is the name of the game for organizations today. It means the difference between success and failure in the marketplace. The masonry industry has recognized that fact by instituting various programs at regional and national levels including the Masonry Quality Institute (MQI) jointly sponsored by the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and the National Concrete Masonry Institute (NCMA). As explained in the September/October 1996 issue of MASONRY in an article by Al Roach titled "Quest for Quality," that program teaches a company to focus on the customers and their needs, and how to establish a management system that consistently and profitably assures that the company meets (or exceeds) those needs. To be effective, these concepts and principles must be applied to the components of masonry as well as the whole. To provide quality masonry, the contractor must provide quality mortar. To do so he must know what the owner's requirements are with respect to mortar and he must establish a system to consistently meet those needs.
