MIC PAVILION A SUCCESS AT THE CSI SHOW

The Masonry Industry Council (MIC) sponsored a masonry pavilion this past June at the Construction Specifications Institute Show in Dallas, Texas. The masonry pavilion had five participating companies (Versa-Lok, Oldcastle, Brick Industries Association, National Concrete Manufacturers Association, and the Mason Contractors Association of America).

Exhibiting companies answered questions, shared information, and even had hands-on demonstrations in their booths to make the pavilion a success. "The CSI Show is a great opportunity to continue our efforts to educate the design community about our product. Every year we meet new people and answer a variety of different questions," according to Harry Junk NCMA Residential Market Manager.

The 2002 CSI Show will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada and will prove to be an exciting year for the masonry pavilion. "The Masonry pavilion will have it's best placement to date in Vegas. We will be right at the front door, and three new companies will be added to our pavilion (Mortar Net, CavClear and Masonry Technology, Inc.), which will give us an even greater presence," said eff Buczkiewicz MCAA Director of Marketing and Chairman of the MIC Market Development Committee.

CALIFORNIA CONTRACTORS DISCUSS VITAL ISSUES

The California Conference of Mason Contractors Association met in Lake Tahoe to review legislative and workforce development efforts of the state group. During the two-day conference, members of the association heard a proposal to broaden mason development training efforts of MITA (Masonry Industry Training Association, a southern California group) into northern California. MITA has been in existence for roughly four years and has trained 60 masons with 30 more currently in the training program. CCMCA Board Members also heard a report from Skip Daum who updated the State Council on efforts to pass legislation to fund vocational training in the states high schools. That legislation was previously passed but vetoed by Governor Gray Davis (D).

During the meeting, the CCMCA Board agreed to hold its winter meeting in conjunction with the MASONRY SHOWCASE, February 6-9 in Phoenix. They also voted to support the construction of the National American Masonry Center, future home of the Mason Contractors Association of America.

Steve Townsend of Townsend & Schmidt Masonry discusses the need for apprenticeship training in northern California.
